Friends
of the Small Communities, directed by Rabbi Yitzchak
Sufrin, was founded because a large proportion of the
Jewish community in the UK live in small communities,
some structured, some not. Their demands range from
having a child circumcised to establishing a Hebrew
class, from keeping a family intact to trying to prevent
inter-marriage, with occasional quite sinister problems
to deal with, such as cults.
By means of regular adult study groups,
one-off visits, Shabbatons and a sympathetic ear, hundreds
of families and individuals have come to recognise that
they are no longer alone, but merely a phone call away.
For these and many others, including people
for whom verbal contact is not always possible, Concord,
the journal of the Small Communities, is a welcome and
colourful visitor to their home, with everything from
a kosher recipe to a thought provoking article on a
Jewish topic, presented in a 21st century style.
Concord has been awarded several prizes
by the Board of Deputies in their annual review of Jewish
magazines in the UK.
